Dr. Sylvia Arsuaga Dr. Melvin Velazquez Dr. Paola Velazquez DDr. Maribel Montes

Dr. Sylvia Arsuaga

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Dr. Arsuaga is passionate about helping patients build and maintain healthy, beautiful smiles. She grew up always admiring her childhood dentist, so it felt natural to follow in her role model’s footsteps and pursue a career in oral healthcare.

She began her education at the University of Puerto Rico, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, then remained there to earn her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. She then completed a General Practice Residency Program before moving to New York to finish a three-year Periodontics and Implant Surgery Residency Program.

Today, she is board-certified by the American Board of Periodontology, and she participates with numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Association, so you can trust that your smile is in the hands of an expert.

Dr. Arsuaga enjoys traveling to her native Puerto Rico to visit with family and friends, is a huge sports fan, and an avid fan of good music, perfumes and fragrances, and a good cup of espresso.

Dr. Melvin Velazquez

Dr. Velazquez has over 30 years of experience helping families near Queens improve their lives by enhancing their dental health. He initially planned to attend medical school, but realized that the artistic and hands-on aspects of the dental field were far more appealing.

He then earned a dental doctorate from the New York College of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn. Today, he’s a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and other professional associations. He remains committed to continuing education so he can offer the most contemporary treatment options using state-of-the-art equipment.

Although he has been providing a comprehensive menu of services since co-founding Woodside Dental Care in 1994, his passion lies in offering treatments such as extractions, smile design, and full-mouth reconstruction.

He and Dr. Montes have been married for more than 30 years and have two lovely children. When he’s not attending to your teeth, Dr. Velazquez enjoys good food and wine with friends and family, and keeping active with outdoor activities such as golf, tennis, and biking.

Dr. Maribel Montes

Dr. Montes co-founded our practice near Queens in 1994, and has passionately provided top-quality services to people of all ages since then. At the tender age of 10, she decided she wanted to become a dentist because she had such positive experiences with her own provider growing up.

She earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the New York University College of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at the Metropolitan Hospital and an additional fellowship in dentistry for the developmentally disabled at the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine. Today, she’s affiliated with several prestigious organizations, including the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Academy of Laser Dentistry, and the Galler Group for Invisalign.

She takes pride in serving her family and community, and enjoys physical activities like Pilates, spin class, and lifting weights to decompress when she’s not in the office saving smiles.

Dr. Paola Velazquez

Dr. Velazquez comes from a family of dentists and learned the value of a healthy smile at an early age. She noticed how her parents enjoyed using their skills to serve others in the community, so it was an easy decision to follow in their footsteps.

She initially studied at Binghamton University before earning her dental degree from the Touro College of Dental Medicine. She takes the time to get to know her patients, tailoring treatment plans to meet even the most unique needs.

When she’s not in the office caring for people’s smiles, you might find her outside on the tennis courts or playing with her dog, or enjoying a good book while relaxing at home.

I Have a Cavity/Broken Tooth

Tooth decay or damaged enamel should be addressed sooner rather than later to prevent your condition from progressing. Cavities are contagious and can affect neighboring teeth, your gums, and your jawbone if left untreated.

Our team near Queens provides comfortable, lifelike dental fillings made from color-matched composite resin or dental crowns customized to be the same shape, shade, and size as your natural teeth for seamless, long-lasting results.

I Am Missing One or More Teeth

Many people feel self-conscious about the changes to their appearance and abilities that accompany tooth loss. If you’re struggling to eat, speak, or smile confidently, our team can provide one or more restorations to rebuild your smile. Full or partial dentures are the tried-and-true solution, but depending on your unique circumstances, you might be a better candidate for a dental bridge. Other patients opt or dental implants, the only replacements surgically embedded into your jawbone to function more like natural teeth

I Am Worried About Bleeding Gums

The earliest form of gum disease, gingivitis, can often be halted or reversed by improving your oral hygiene, but once it progresses past a certain point, it can only be managed and not fully treated.

Our team near Queens offers antibiotic treatment, scaling and root planing, and laser periodontal services to address infected connective tissues to preserve your smile and prevent potential tooth loss.

I Am Nervous/Scared of the Dentist

Whatever the reason for your visit, we offer three options for sedation to help you feel calm and comfortable throughout your procedure. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) acts quickly and is administered through a gas mask placed over your nose while we work. Oral conscious sedation is prescribed as a pill that you’ll be directed to take about an hour before you arrive, so it kicks in by the time we start working. If neither of those is feasible, we can also administer IV sedation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the best place to get dental work done?

If it’s been a while since your last routine appointment, you might need to find a new dentist. Performing a search in your favorite internet browser will likely return a long list of results near Queens. If you’re struggling to narrow your search, it might help to take a little bit of time to write down the exact traits you’re seeking.

For example, do you need someone who provides specific services that you know you’re going to need? Are you seeking a provider who is in-network with your dental insurance? Identifying a few key priorities can help you find a dentist who is more likely to meet your individual needs.

What level of education is required to be a dentist?

Many patients wonder what makes their dentist qualified to care for their smile, but the truth is that becoming a dentist involves meeting rigorous educational and professional standards. All licensed dentists must have a bachelor’s degree and then earn either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from one of more than 70 institutions accredited through the American Dental Association. Then, they can choose to specialize in a specific area of dentistry.

At our office near Queens, patients benefit from the expertise of four dentists who have undergone in-depth training in a variety of topics, including pediatric dentistry, working with children with special needs, cosmetic dentistry, and restorative treatments.

What’s the best way to find a dentist who does dental implants?

Unlike dentures and dental bridges, replacing lost teeth with dental implants involves oral surgery. Not all general dentists have the advanced training or experience to perform this surgery, so it’s important to find a skilled provider you can trust. You may want to consider consulting a specialist, such as a periodontist, oral surgeon, or prosthodontist, to increase the likelihood of implant success.

Fortunately, at our office near Queens, Dr. Arsuaga has completed a three-year Periodontics and Implant Surgery Residency Program. That means she has in-depth training and state-of-the-art equipment to perform your procedure, so you don’t have to seek an outside provider.

What if you can’t afford dental services?

Dental insurance is an easy and effective way to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses for dental care. Most plans are designed to promote proper prevention by covering 100% of standard services, like annual exams, cleanings, and X-rays. Then, they often cover 50% to 80% of other services needed to treat issues, such as root canals, extractions, and dental crowns.

However, our team near Queens understands that not everyone carries a policy. If you’re uninsured and are worried you can’t pay for services rendered, don’t lose hope! We offer low-to-no-interest flexible financial packages through CareCredit. If your application is approved, you can divvy your total invoice into more manageable installments over a designated period that’s easier on your wallet.
